Bhopal, Oct 19: A major political controversy has erupted after former Bhopal MP Pragya Singh Thakur made shocking remarks urging parents to prevent their daughters from visiting the homes of “non-Hindus” — even suggesting that they “break their legs” if they disobey.
Speaking at a religious event in Bhopal earlier this month, the BJP leader stirred outrage by telling parents to use physical force on their daughters “for their own good” if they went against family or religious values.

“Strengthen your minds and make them firm enough that if our daughter does not obey us, if she goes to a non-Hindu’s house, leave no stone unturned in considering breaking her legs,” Thakur is heard saying in a video that has since gone viral on social media. “Those who do not follow values or listen to their parents must be punished. When parents act this way, it is for the good of their children — they save them from being cut into pieces,” she added.
Continuing her speech, Thakur said parents must be alert to “wayward” girls. “Such girls who do not follow values, do not listen to parents, or are ready to run away from home — be more vigilant towards them. Don’t let them leave home; stop them by explaining, scolding, or even beating if needed,” she remarked.
Her comments have drawn widespread criticism, with the Congress accusing the BJP of spreading hatred and promoting regressive ideas.
Reacting sharply, Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta said, “Why is so much hatred being spread when only seven cases of alleged religious conversions in Madhya Pradesh have even resulted in convictions? Leaders like Pragya Thakur are trying to divide society instead of addressing real issues.”
Thakur’s remarks have sparked heated debate on social media and among political circles, with many calling for disciplinary action against her for promoting violence and intolerance in the name of religion.
