Akhilesh sparks row over Diwali remarks, BJP says he has problem with Ayodhya’s shine

Lucknow, Oct 19: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday triggered a political storm after questioning the government’s spending on Diwali celebrations and drawing parallels with Christmas festivities across the world.

Speaking at a public gathering, Yadav said, “Across the world, cities remain illuminated for months during Christmas. We should learn from them. Why do we have to spend money on lamps and candles and think so much about it?” He further added, “What can we expect from this government? It should be removed. We will make sure there are more beautiful lights.”

His comments came as Ayodhya prepared to set a world record by lighting over 26 lakh diyas across Ram Ki Paidi and 56 ghats, showcasing the city’s spiritual grandeur.

Reacting sharply, the BJP accused Yadav of being “disturbed by Ayodhya’s radiance.” BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Ayodhya was kept in darkness during SP’s rule. Now when Ayodhya is shining, Akhilesh Yadav has a problem. These people used to host singing and dancing events in Saifai, but can’t stand Diwali in Ayodhya.”

The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) also lashed out, with its spokesperson Vinod Bansal alleging that Yadav was glorifying foreign traditions over Indian culture. “He praises Christmas on Diwali and tells Hindus not to waste money on diyas. The radiance of Ayodhya seems to have burned his heart,” Bansal said.

Bansal further added, “Even before Christianity existed, Diwali was celebrated. Yet, he lectures about Christmas today. His jealousy towards Ayodhya’s joy shows his anti-Sanatana mindset.”
