Chennai, Oct 17: A major security alert was triggered in Chennai on Thursday evening after an anonymous email claimed a bomb had been planted at Vice President CP Radhakrishnan’s Mylapore residence. Police rushed to the site, cordoned off the area, and conducted extensive searches, but no explosives were found, and investigators later confirmed the threat to be a hoax.

The email specifically mentioned the vice president’s Mylapore home, which has not been in use for some time. For thoroughness, police also inspected his current residence at Poes Garden. Both locations were declared safe after checks by the bomb disposal and dog squads.

This incident is part of a worrying trend of email-based bomb threats targeting VIPs, schools, media offices, IT companies, and other institutions in Chennai. Authorities have carried out multiple evacuations in recent months, causing temporary disruptions in public and institutional activities.

Actor-politician Vijay was recently targeted with similar email threats, one of which led to the arrest of a hotel worker for sending a hoax mail. Senior police officials confirmed that efforts are underway to trace the origin of such emails, which often use fake accounts or international servers to conceal identities.

A senior officer stated, “We are not taking any chances. Every threat triggers a full security drill as part of our standard protocol,” underscoring the vigilance of Chennai police in safeguarding public figures.
