Panaji, Oct 17: The Panaji police have strongly opposed the bail plea of 36-year-old history-sheeter Zenito Cardozo, accused in the alleged assault of activist Rama Kankonkar. The police highlighted that Cardozo has nine prior cases registered against him and could potentially threaten witnesses or tamper with evidence.
Officials stated that the investigation is still at a preliminary stage, and the agency requires more time to probe the roots of the crime and uncover any conspiracy behind it. “The crime committed by the accused is serious and has created fear among the public in Goa. A large number of people and supporters have gathered in solidarity with the victim, holding protests in Panaji,” the police added.

Authorities further warned that if bail is granted, the accused may interfere with witnesses or threaten the victim’s family. There is also a risk that he could abscond and fail to appear for the trial.
“Investigation is ongoing, and additional time is needed to collect more evidence and complete the inquiry,” the Panaji police said, urging the court to deny bail at this stage to ensure a fair and thorough investigation.
