Worms found in azithromycin syrup at Gwalior Hospital, probe underway

Gwalior, Oct 16: In a disturbing incident in Madhya Pradesh, worms were discovered in Azithromycin syrup prescribed to children at the Murar District Hospital, raising fresh concerns over the safety of medicines following the recent cough syrup tragedy that claimed 20 young lives.

The contamination was spotted when a mother examined the syrup before giving it to her child and noticed what appeared to be a black insect. She immediately informed the hospital authorities, and Civil Surgeon Dr. R.K. Sharma was notified.

The Food and Drug Department quickly formed an investigation team, led by Drug Inspector Anubhuti Sharma, which collected syrup samples and issued orders to halt distribution of Azithromycin syrup. The recall process has been initiated at all distribution centres where the batch had already been dispatched.

Initial investigations indicate that the syrup was supplied from a government store in Bhopal. Authorities are now tracing batch numbers to identify other districts where the syrup was sent to ensure it is banned and recalled promptly. Samples have been sent to the lab for testing, and strict legal action will be taken if the syrup is found to contain substandard or harmful ingredients.

Hospitals in the affected areas have been instructed to stop using the syrup until the probe is completed, as authorities work to safeguard children from further risk.
