Fresh clashes erupt between Pakistani forces and Afghan Taliban along Kurram border

Kurram, Oct 15: Tensions flared once again along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border on Tuesday night, as Pakistani security forces clashed with Afghan Taliban fighters in Kurram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, according to reports.

State-run Pakistani media claimed that Afghan forces fired first without provocation, prompting Pakistani troops to retaliate. The exchange reportedly damaged several Afghan tanks and posts. Two Pakistani security officials confirmed the incident to the Associated Press.

PTV News reported, “Afghan Taliban and Fitna al-Khawarij opened unprovoked fire in Kurram. Pakistani Army responded with full force and intensity.” Islamabad has repeatedly accused Afghan forces of targeting its border posts, while Kabul insists its actions are defensive responses to violations of Afghan airspace and sovereignty.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), the clash began when Afghan troops, together with Pakistani Taliban fighters, attacked a post in Kurram. Pakistani forces countered strongly, destroying what officials described as a major training camp used by the Taliban fighters, who reportedly fled after the exchange of fire.

Pakistan’s military has yet to issue an official statement. Over the weekend, Afghanistan’s Taliban government claimed to have killed 58 Pakistani soldiers in retaliatory strikes, a figure Islamabad disputed, stating it lost 23 soldiers while eliminating over 200 Taliban and affiliated militants in response.

Background of Tensions:

The border region has been a flashpoint due to the presence of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), which operates from Afghan territory. Pakistan has conducted cross-border attacks against TTP hideouts, blaming Kabul for allowing the group to operate freely. Afghanistan, however, denies these claims, insisting its soil is not being used to target neighbouring countries.

The latest clashes underscore the long-standing friction along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, raising concerns over escalating violence in the region.
