ChatGPT to enable direct shopping with AI-powered payments

New Delhi, Oct 10: ChatGPT is set to move beyond making shopping recommendations to actually enabling users to make purchases directly within the platform.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and fintech startup Razorpay have partnered with OpenAI to launch AI-powered payments on ChatGPT through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

Currently in its pilot phase, the initiative will allow users to complete transactions without leaving the ChatGPT window. The system uses agentic AI payments, enabling ChatGPT to act as a trusted shopping assistant that can securely execute payments on behalf of users.

The service is built on NPCI’s new features, UPI Circle and UPI Reserve Pay, which let users pre-authorise payments within set limits. This removes the need for repeated PIN or OTP verification, making transactions faster and more seamless.

The move follows similar launches by Google and Perplexity AI earlier this year and marks a major step towards integrating artificial intelligence with India’s digital payment ecosystem.
