Trump claims his tariffs brokered India-Pakistan peace deal

Washington, Oct 7: US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that his controversial trade tariffs played a key role in brokering a peace deal between India and Pakistan during their armed conflict earlier this year. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said the tariffs not only helped maintain peace but also earned the United States “hundreds of billions of dollars.”

“If I didn’t have the power of tariffs, you would have at least four of the seven wars raging,” Trump asserted. Referring to the India-Pakistan situation, he added, “Seven planes were shot down… Not only did we make hundreds of billions of dollars, but we’re a peacekeeper because of tariffs.”

Trump first announced on May 10 that India and Pakistan had agreed to a “full and immediate” ceasefire after talks mediated by Washington. In August, he claimed that he threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi with high tariffs to push India toward peace with Pakistan, saying, “Call me back tomorrow, but we’re not going to do any deals with you, or we’re going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head’s going to spin.”

According to Trump, a peace understanding was reached within five hours of his discussions with Modi. India, however, stated that the ceasefire resulted from direct talks between the Indian and Pakistani military officials. Pakistan initially denied Trump’s role but later accepted it and even nominated him for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his alleged diplomatic intervention.

Trump’s repeated claims have sparked discussion about the role of economic leverage in international peace efforts, with the US leader positioning himself as a global peacemaker while highlighting the financial gains from his tariff policies.
