Tiruvannamalai, Oct 1: Two policemen in Tiruvannamalai district, Tamil Nadu, have been arrested and suspended for allegedly gang-raping a 25-year-old woman from Andhra Pradesh, police officials confirmed on Tuesday.
According to investigators, the survivor and her mother had travelled to Tiruvannamalai on Monday to sell fruits. Late at night, while waiting on the roadside, their vehicle was intercepted by two constables on patrol duty, identified as D Sureshraj and P Sundar.

The women were allegedly taken to a secluded location where the daughter was sexually assaulted, the police said in an official statement. Both accused officers have been arrested and suspended, with authorities stating that steps are being taken to ensure the maximum punishment, including dismissal from service. The investigation is ongoing.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage in the state. AIADMK chief and Leader of Opposition Edappadi K Palaniswami condemned the act, terming it a “dark blot” on Tamil Nadu’s law and order situation.
“The DMK government has to bow down in shame. I condemn the Stalin model government for pushing women to protect themselves from the police who ought to be their stronghold,” he said.
The case has reignited debates over police accountability and the safety of women in the state.
