New Delhi, Sep 30: In a move to enforce transparency and accountability in higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued notices to 54 private universities across India for failing to comply with mandatory disclosure norms under the UGC Act, 1956. These universities, spread across states including Gujarat, Haryana, Assam, Punjab, Rajasthan, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Manipur, Sikkim, Tripura, and Madhya Pradesh, have either not submitted required details to the Commission or failed to publish self-disclosure information on their official websites, despite multiple reminders.
Under UGC regulations, all universities are obligated to provide public access to essential details such as course offerings, faculty information, research activities, student strength, infrastructure, and financial systems. This information must be easily accessible on their websites without any login requirements, ensuring transparency for students, parents, and the general public. However, the Commission found that the listed institutions had not uploaded or shared this critical data, breaching the established norms.

UGC secretary professor Manish Joshi has formally written to each of the non-compliant institutions, instructing them to immediately update their websites with the required information and also submit it directly to the Commission. He emphasized the importance of transparency in helping students and parents make informed decisions about educational opportunities. According to the UGC, some of the universities have begun the process of updating their websites, while others have assured compliance in the coming days.
The UGC clarified that merely uploading the information on the institution’s portal is not sufficient — the data must also be submitted to the Commission for review and monitoring. The Commission reiterated that the self-disclosure system is a crucial measure to uphold institutional integrity, foster trust among stakeholders, and ensure that universities operate in an open and accountable manner.
The complete list of the 54 non-compliant universities has been made available on the official UGC website for public reference.
