Amravati, Sep 30: Dr Kamaltai R Gavai, mother of Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, is set to be the chief guest at the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh’s (RSS) centenary Vijayadashami celebrations in Amravati on October 5. While appearing as a routine city-level programme, her participation carries significant attention given her son’s position as the country’s top judge.
Kamaltai, head of the Shri Dadasaheb Gavai Charitable Trust, is a respected social worker and educationist in the Vidarbha region. The RSS has clarified that she has been invited in her personal capacity for her societal contributions. The event, hosted at Srimati Narsamma Mahavidyalaya Maidan in Kiran Nagar, will feature J Nanda Kumar, head of the Sangh’s intellectual wing Prajna Pravah, delivering the keynote address.
The presence of the Gavai family at RSS events is not unprecedented. In 1981, documents show that CJI Gavai’s father attended an RSS function in Nagpur. Decades later, Kamaltai’s participation reflects both a familial and historical continuity in Maharashtra’s socio-political landscape.
RS Gavai, former governor and Republican movement stalwart, often engaged with RSS platforms while critiquing social hierarchies. Continuing the legacy, Rajendra Gavai, Kamaltai’s eldest son and Republican Party of India leader, stated he and his party will “stand by whatever decision” his mother takes regarding the RSS invitation.
The event underscores the Sangh’s layered outreach across social spectra, with Kamaltai’s participation resonating far beyond Amravati.
