Grand Blanc Township, Sep 29: A gunman opened fire inside a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel here during Sunday service, killing at least four people and injuring eight before setting the building ablaze. The attacker, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford of nearby Burton, was shot dead by police.

Police Chief William Renye said the suspect rammed a pickup truck carrying two American flags through the church’s front door around 10.30 am, then began shooting. Investigators believe he “deliberately” set the church on fire. Flames and smoke poured from the building for hours before the blaze was extinguished.

Officers reached the scene within 30 seconds of a 911 call and killed the gunman about eight minutes later. Two victims were found as authorities sifted through the charred debris, and officials warned the toll could rise. One wounded person remains in critical condition, while seven others are stable.

Authorities are searching the suspect’s Burton residence for clues to a motive, which remains unclear. The FBI is assisting local investigators, with 100 agents dispatched to the area.

President Donald Trump said he was briefed on the tragedy and praised the FBI response, urging an end to the “epidemic of violence.” Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the attack “unacceptable,” offering condolences to the victims’ families.

The church’s spokesperson, Doug Anderson, said it is in touch with law enforcement and praying for healing. Residents and nearby congregations expressed shock, with one local ward going into lockdown as the news spread.

The shooting came a day after the death of Russell M. Nelson, 101, president of the Utah-based faith, adding to the sorrow of the community of about 40,000 people outside Flint.
