Virginia, Sep 21: US President Donald Trump on Saturday renewed his call for European nations to halt oil purchases from Russia, linking the move to increased pressure on Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine.
Speaking at a dinner event near Washington, Trump said, “The Europeans are buying oil from Russia—not supposed to happen, right?” He expressed frustration that while the US fights against Russian aggression, some European countries continue to import Russian energy.
Trump highlighted ongoing shipments to Hungary and other landlocked nations, noting that diesel from Russia is also imported via India and Turkey after refining. He urged US NATO ambassador Matt Whitaker to press Europe to end such purchases.
The former president added that squeezing oil prices “a little bit more” could help halt the war, while voicing disappointment with President Putin’s conduct in the conflict.
