Canacona, Sep 20: A tragic accident unfolded early Friday morning on NH-66 near Madditolop (Maxem), Canacona, where 11 cattle—mostly cows—were killed after being struck by two high-speed transport vehicles.
Eyewitnesses, including workers from a nearby petrol pump, reported that the animals were mowed down by two fish transport trucks travelling at high speed in opposite directions. The collision left the animals dead on the spot, prompting an immediate response from local authorities.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are working to identify the vehicles involved. Preliminary reports suggest a lack of visibility and overspeeding as contributing factors. Officials are also examining the possibility of implementing new safety measures to prevent such accidents in the future, especially in areas where stray animals are common near highways.
The incident has sparked concern among locals and animal welfare advocates, who have called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and better fencing along busy national highways.
