Uttara Kannada: 9-year-old fatally shot by younger brother in air gun tragedy while playing

Uttara Kannada, Sep 6: In a deeply tragic accident, a nine-year-old boy lost his life after being accidentally shot by his younger brother with an air gun while the two were playing at their home in Sirsi, Uttara Kannada district, on Friday afternoon.

The heart-rending incident occurred at the residence of Raghavendra Keshava Hegde in Somanalli, Sirsi. The victim, Kariyappa (9), and his younger brother, aged seven, are the children of Basappa Undiyar, who works as a domestic help at the household.

According to police, the brothers were playing in the courtyard when the younger sibling accidentally fired a round from the air gun, fatally striking his elder brother. Kariyappa died on the spot, police confirmed.

Police officials revealed that the moment of the accident was captured on CCTV, which has been reviewed as part of the investigation.

“It was an innocent game between two children that ended in an unimaginable tragedy. The family is in deep shock,” said a police officer from Sirsi Rural police station, under whose jurisdiction the case falls.

Upon receiving the report, circle police inspector Shashikant Verma and police sub-inspector Santosh Kumar rushed to the scene and conducted a detailed inspection.

The police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation. The air gun has been seized.
