Dalit man alleges humiliation by DMK councillor in Villupuram; police case registered

Chennai, Sep 3: A video from Tamil Nadu’s Villupuram district has sparked a major controversy after a Dalit municipal employee alleged that he was humiliated by a ruling DMK councillor.

The 56-second video, which surfaced online, shows Muniappan, a junior assistant, falling at the feet of councillor Ramya during what appeared to be a discussion. Although the councillor is heard objecting and asking him not to, the incident has now snowballed into a political row.

Initially, police stated that Muniappan had given a written declaration claiming he had fallen at her feet voluntarily. However, in a fresh complaint, he alleged that the councillor had compelled him to kneel, following which he approached the police seeking justice.

Based on his complaint, a case has been registered against councillor Ramya and a few others under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. While no arrests have been made so far, officials confirmed that an investigation is underway, including examination of CCTV footage and statements from all parties concerned.

According to police sources, the controversy also follows an earlier complaint made by councillor Ramya to the municipal commissioner against Muniappan, adding another twist to the case.
