Imphal, Sep 2: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Mizoram and Manipur on September 13, officials in Aizawl told PTI. The PM will reportedly inaugurate the new Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram, a key project under the centre’s act east policy, aimed at boosting connectivity and economic integration across the Northeast. The 51.38-km railway line will link Aizawl with the rest of the country via Silchar in Assam.

Following the inauguration, PM Modi is expected to fly to Manipur, marking his first visit since ethnic violence broke out in the state in May 2023. However, officials in Imphal have yet to confirm the visit or final itinerary.

In preparation, Mizoram chief secretary Khilli Ram Meena convened a meeting with various departments and law enforcement agencies to review security, traffic management, street decoration, and arrangements to allow government employees, farmers, and students to participate in the inaugural event in Lammaul, Aizawl.

Meanwhile, in Manipur, president’s rule has been extended by six months until January next year, following a resolution introduced by union home minister Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha. The state has been under president’s Rule since February 13, after former chief minister N Biren Singh resigned amid political tensions within the BJP.

The ethnic conflict between the Kuki-Zo and meitei communities, which began on 3 May 2023, resulted in over 250 deaths and forced more than 60,000 people to flee their homes. The extension of President’s Rule was formally approved by the Lok Sabha in July 2025, ensuring continued central administration in the troubled state.
