New Delhi, Aug 28: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday declared 2026 as the deadline to end fresh dumping of waste at Delhi’s overflowing landfill sites, terming the goal “non-negotiable.”

Chairing a review meeting on solid waste management with Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood, Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh and senior MCD officials, Gupta stressed the need to speed up waste processing.

Mayor Singh said MCD has raised its biomining capacity from 15,000 to 25,000 tonnes per day. The Chief Minister instructed officials to clear hurdles in Waste-to-Energy projects and warned against further delays.

Authorities confirmed that each municipal zone will soon set up its own waste management centre. The “Freedom from Garbage” campaign, launched earlier this year, has been extended till October 2, 2025.

Gupta underlined that public participation is crucial for success. “Government efforts alone will not be enough. Citizens must join hands in this mission,” she said.
