India’s decade of transformation in food, energy & defence security

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 14: Over the past decade, India has undergone a sweeping transformation across three critical pillars of national security — food security, energy security, and defence capability — powered by visionary policies, strategic investments, and technology-driven innovation, according to a report by India Narrative.

Food Security: From Surplus to Global Contributor

India has firmly established itself as an agricultural powerhouse:

• 2nd largest producer of rice and wheat
• Largest producer of pulses and sugar

Foodgrain production surged from 256.4 million tonnes in 2015–16 to 315.72 million tonnes in 2021–22 — a jump of nearly 60 million tonnes in under a decade.

This growth has been driven by a comprehensive strategy:

• Expansion of irrigation and farm mechanisation
• Deployment of high-yield seeds
• Welfare schemes like:
o PM-KISAN (direct income support to 110+ million farmers)
o MGNREGA (boosting rural purchasing power)
o Soil Health Card and PM Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (for sustainable land and water use)

India’s agri-exports — including shrimp and spices — have also strengthened global food supply chains, making it a reliable partner in international markets.

Energy Security: From Darkness to Decarbonisation

In 2014, millions in India still lacked basic electricity access. Fast forward to April 2018, India achieved 100% village electrification, connecting over 28 million households. Schemes like DDUGJY, SAUBHAGYA, and Ujjwala Yojana transformed rural and household energy access.

As of June 2025:

• Total installed power capacity: 476 GW
• Renewables share: 47.7% (up from just 16% in 2015)
• Solar power: 110.9 GW (from 9 GW in 2016) – 3rd globally
• Wind power: 51.3 GW – 4th globally

Power shortages, which previously crippled industry, have dropped from 4.2% in 2013–14 to a negligible 0.1% in 2024–25. Meanwhile, energy diversification, strategic petroleum reserves, and global energy assets have reduced India’s vulnerability to global shocks.

Defence Security: Self-Reliant and Stronger Than Ever

India’s defence preparedness has seen a dramatic shift under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative:

• Indigenous missile systems like Agni, Prithvi, and BrahMos have strengthened deterrence.
• INS Arihant, India’s first nuclear-powered ballistic submarine, completes the nuclear triad.

Recent milestones:

• Pralay tactical missile: quick-launch, high-precision capability
• Agni Prime: upgraded long-range strike missile
• AI-powered systems, AR-based tactical gear, exoskeletons, and smart armour are now being integrated into the armed forces.

Defence Industrial Corridors in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have attracted over Rs 20,000 crore in investments, fueling a boom in defence exports — from supplying just 20 countries a decade ago to now over 100 nations.

The success of Operation Sindoor against Pakistan highlighted the capabilities of indigenous platforms like Tejas fighter jets, Akash missile systems, BrahMos, and LCH Prachand helicopters.

Moreover, cross-border security has improved, with a notable decline in insurgency incidents, further underlining the effectiveness of India’s evolving security ecosystem.

India's transformation in these three areas not only boosts national resilience but also positions the country as a global leader in sustainable security strategy — an outcome of decisive leadership and long-term vision.
