Kolkata, Aug 13: Renowned Bengali film and television actor Basanti Chatterjee breathed her last at her Kolkata residence on August 12. She was 88.
Chatterjee had been battling cancer for a prolonged period and had spent several months in the ICCU of a city hospital. Doctors later advised home care under constant supervision of nurses, the West Bengal Motion Picture Artists' Forum stated.
In a remarkable career spanning over five decades, Chatterjee acted in more than 100 films, earning acclaim for roles in Thagini, Manjari Opera, and Alo. She was also a familiar face on television, appearing in popular serials like Bhutu, Boron, and Durga Durgeshari. Her final appearance was in Gita LLB, where she fell critically ill during the shoot.
A passionate stage performer in her younger years, Chatterjee remained committed to her craft despite failing health.
Expressing grief, actor Bhaswar Chatterjee said, “She had been enduring immense physical pain lately, yet her artistry remained unmatched.”
