'Saiyaara' turns blockbuster with Rs 308 cr in 3 weeks, breaks records for newcomer-led film

Mumbai, Aug 8: Director Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara, which hit theatres on July 18, has become a pop-culture sensation and a box office juggernaut, crossing Rs 308.45 cr in India and over Rs 500 cr globally within three weeks of release.

The romantic drama, starring debutants Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, has stunned both trade analysts and audiences with its phenomenal success — especially as it marks a major victory for a newcomer-led film.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh, speaking to NDTV, hailed the film’s achievements. “Saiyaara has rewritten all records. It’s the biggest opener and biggest grosser ever for a film starring newcomers,” he said. “It has crossed Rs 300 cr, a feat never seen before for new faces. While I don’t see it reaching Rs 500 cr domestically, this itself is a massive achievement.”

On August 7, the film collected Rs 1.85 cr, taking its total to Rs 308.45 cr, according to Sacnilk. It has emerged as the second-highest-grossing film of 2025 after Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava.

Adarsh noted that the film's appeal isn't limited to India alone. “It has worked across the globe, which shows the potential of the film. It’s a huge blockbuster,” he added.

Saiyaara also outperformed high-profile releases like Son of Sardaar 2 starring Ajay Devgn and Dharma Productions’ Dhadak 2 with Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi. Both films released on August 1, two weeks after Saiyaara, and earned Rs 1.40 cr and Rs 1 cr respectively on Thursday — significantly less than Suri’s blockbuster.

The film’s record-breaking opening weekend and continued strong performance have left it unchallenged, with only Mahavtar Narsimha showing potential as a competitor.

What makes Saiyaara’s rise all the more impressive is the skepticism it faced pre-release. “Before the release, a lot of people didn’t think this movie would work,” Adarsh said. “But the box office speaks for itself.”

With global earnings already crossing Rs 500 cr and domestic numbers climbing steadily, Saiyaara continues to shine as 2025’s biggest surprise success.
