New Delhi, Jul 25: In a landmark political milestone, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday etched his name deeper into the annals of Indian political history by becoming the second longest consecutively serving Prime Minister of the country, overtaking former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi.

PM Modi completed 4,078 days in office on July 25, 2025, surpassing Indira Gandhi’s unbroken tenure of 4,077 days from January 24, 1966, to March 24, 1977. With this, he stands next only to the country's first Prime Minister, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, who remains the longest-serving head of government.

This moment marks yet another feather in the cap of Narendra Modi, a leader known for his political acumen and unwavering public connect. Born in Vadnagar, Gujarat, into a humble family, Modi's rise from helping his father at a tea stall to leading the world's largest democracy is nothing short of remarkable.

PM Modi has several other firsts to his credit. He is the first and only Prime Minister born after India’s independence, and the longest-serving non-Congress Prime Minister in the country's history. He also holds the distinction of being the longest-serving PM from a non-Hindi-speaking state, a testament to his pan-India appeal.

He is also the first non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as Prime Minister and return for a third consecutive term with an absolute majority—an achievement unmatched by any other non-Congress politician in India. The last time a sitting Prime Minister returned to power with a full majority was in 1971 under Indira Gandhi.

PM Modi now joins Pandit Nehru as the only Prime Ministers to have led their parties to three successive Lok Sabha victories. In total, Modi has won six consecutive elections as the face of his party, including three assembly victories in Gujarat (2002, 2007, 2012) and three national elections (2014, 2019, 2024).

With nearly 24 years of continuous governance—first as Gujarat Chief Minister and now at the Centre—PM Modi’s journey reflects the transformation of Indian politics, shaped by his governance model and global outreach. He has played a pivotal role in giving India a strong voice on international platforms, bolstering its image as a rising global power.

As he continues his third term, political observers and citizens alike watch closely to see how PM Modi further shapes India’s future trajectory—both at home and on the world stage.
