London, Jul 25: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his official visit to the UK, expressed gratitude to his British counterpart Keir Starmer for unequivocally denouncing the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, underlining that extremist ideologies must not be allowed to exploit democratic freedoms.
Speaking at a joint press interaction with Starmer, PM Modi stated, “We appreciate PM Starmer’s strong condemnation of the Pahalgam attack. There can be no room for double standards in the global fight against terrorism. Extremist elements misusing democratic platforms must be held accountable.”
His remarks come in the backdrop of rising concerns over Khalistani extremist activity in the UK, which has seen repeated incidents of violence and vandalism, including disruptions at the Indian High Commission in London.

Modi and Starmer also reaffirmed their commitment to working closely on the extradition of fugitive economic offenders wanted in India. Indian officials have long pressed for action against such individuals, many of whom continue to reside in the UK.
On broader regional and international issues, the two leaders discussed the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, as well as the situation in the Indo-Pacific. Modi stressed India’s position on upholding sovereignty and territorial integrity, remarking, “The world today needs development, not expansionism.”
India’s concerns over Khalistani groups operating from British soil remain a key issue in diplomatic talks. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, ahead of Modi’s visit, reiterated New Delhi’s stance, saying the presence of such radical elements affects not only India’s security but also disrupts social harmony in the UK.
In recent years, pro-Khalistan demonstrations and security breaches — including incidents outside venues attended by top Indian officials like External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar — have prompted India to demand better protection from British authorities.
The Indian government has repeatedly pushed for the extradition of several high-profile fugitives wanted for financial crimes. While the legal processes in the UK remain complex and slow, Misri said India is pursuing these matters diligently through official channels.
This marks Modi’s fourth official visit to the United Kingdom, amid ongoing efforts to deepen strategic, economic, and security cooperation between the two nations.
