Vellore, Jul 21: Medical experts have called for early diagnosis and simple lifestyle changes to prevent complications arising from Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD), during a webinar titled ‘GERD-free Living: From Burn to Balance’ held on Sunday.

The session marked the finale of a 15-part webinar series under the ‘Healthy India Happy India’ initiative by Naruvi Hospitals in collaboration with The Hindu.

Addressing common concerns, gastroenterologists Dr E. Rabindranath and Dr Jacob Raja A S from Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, and Dr A C Arun from Lily Mission Hospital, Madurai, emphasized that persistent acid reflux, chest pain, and swallowing difficulties can lead to chronic GERD, affecting sleep, work, and overall quality of life.

Dr Jacob explained the role of the esophageal sphincter and noted that GERD affects one in five people globally, with cases increasing in Indian youth due to unhealthy diets and sedentary habits.

Dr Rabindranath advised lifestyle changes including quitting smoking and alcohol, avoiding spicy and fatty food, managing stress, and adopting portion control. “GERD symptoms can mimic heart conditions, anxiety or other gastrointestinal issues, making timely medical consultation essential,” he cautioned.

He also suggested practical tips like elevating the head while sleeping, keeping a 3-4 hour gap between dinner and bedtime, sleeping on the left side, and wearing loose clothes during workouts.

On treatment methods, Dr Arun highlighted the importance of endoscopy in detecting complications such as ulcers, strictures, or even pre-cancerous conditions. He said, “Early intervention through medication, minor surgeries, or endoscopic procedures can halt the disease progression.”
