Washington, Jul 20: US President Donald Trump has signaled his intent to intervene on behalf of Afghan nationals who have been stuck in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for years after fleeing their homeland following the Taliban's return to power in 2021.
In a post shared Sunday on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote, “I will try to save them, starting right now,” while linking to a report highlighting the plight of the stranded Afghans. His comments come despite his administration’s historically hard stance on immigration and refugee resettlement during his presidency.
Back in 2021, the UAE had agreed to temporarily house thousands of Afghans who were airlifted from Kabul during the final days of the US-led withdrawal from Afghanistan, when the Taliban swiftly took control of the capital. Though some of them have since been resettled, including around 1,000 Afghans accepted by Canada in 2022 at the request of the US, many remain in limbo with uncertain futures.
The Biden administration has brought nearly 200,000 Afghan refugees to the US following the withdrawal, including those who assisted American forces during the two-decade war, family members of Afghan-American military personnel, and unaccompanied children waiting to reunite with parents.
Trump’s new stance stands in contrast to policies enacted during his term, when refugee admissions were severely curtailed and temporary deportation protections for many Afghans in the US were ended.
