Mumbai, Jul 15: Kajol’s latest film Maa has emerged as her eighth highest-grossing film, collecting Rs 35.64 cr in 18 days. Despite this respectable performance, the film is unlikely to surpass Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which remains Kajol’s seventh biggest hit with a lifetime collection of Rs 46.88 cr.

Maa opened with promise, earning Rs 4.65 cr on Day 1 and showing steady weekend growth. However, collections dropped sharply starting Monday, bringing in only Rs 2.5 cr. The first week closed at Rs 26.5 cr, a decent total for a mid-range film.

In its second week, the film saw a steep decline with a 70 percent drop in collections. Though there was a slight weekend recovery, interest faded by Day 14. In its third week, Maa added just Rs 1.34 cr, with newer releases like Saiyaara and strong competition from films like Sitaare Zameen Par affecting its run.

While Maa has earned praise for Kajol’s performance and strong emotional appeal, it lacks the cultural impact of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, the Karan Johar directorial that remains a generational favourite.

Kajol’s top-grossing films still include Tanhaji, Dilwale, My Name Is Khan, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Fanaa, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, all of which continue to enjoy a lasting legacy at the box office and among audiences.

Maa may not rewrite records, but it strengthens Kajol’s position as a timeless performer capable of drawing audiences even in today’s evolving cinema landscape.
