Two suspected ISI linkmen held in West Bengal, remanded to police custody

Kolkata, Jul 8: West Bengal Police on Tuesday confirmed the arrest of two individuals suspected of links with Pakistan’s intelligence agency ISI, in a covert operation by the Special Task Force (STF). The accused, Mukhesh Rajak from Panagarh and Rakesh Kumar Gupta from Bhawanipur, Kolkata, were apprehended early Sunday from Memari in East Burdwan district.

Both men have been remanded to seven days of police custody by a lower court in Kolkata. Their arrests were kept under wraps until court proceedings concluded, given the sensitive nature of the case.

According to police sources, the duo posed as members of a non-governmental organisation, using it as a front for alleged espionage activities. Initial investigations suggest they were operating as ISI linkmen, raising concerns about a larger espionage network at play.

Mobile phones recovered from the accused are being forensically examined for call records and chat logs to uncover the scale of their operations and identify possible contacts across the border.

Police are also probing how long the two had been active and what kind of classified or sensitive information might have been passed on to ISI handlers. Officials said further arrests are possible as the investigation unfolds.
