Trump signs major tax, spending cuts on July 4

Washington, Jul 5: In a grand Independence Day ceremony that doubled as a political rally, U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday signed into law a massive package of tax and spending cuts—marking a key legislative victory in his second term.

Held on the South Lawn of the White House with military flyovers and hundreds of cheering supporters, Trump touted the bill as a historic win, calling it “the biggest tax cut, the biggest spending cut, the largest border security investment in American history.”

The bill passed the Republican-led House by a narrow 218-214 margin after a fiery debate. It will fund Trump’s immigration crackdown, make permanent his 2017 tax cuts, and is expected to remove millions from federally backed health insurance programmes.

Only two-House Republicans voted against the measure, while all 212 Democrats opposed it. The bill was shepherded through Congress by House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, both of whom joined Trump at the signing.

Critics, including Democrats and some economists, warn the legislation could add over $3 trillion to the national debt and disproportionately benefit the wealthy while slashing health and food aid for low-income Americans.

Democratic House leader Hakeem Jeffries led a record-breaking eight-hour floor speech opposing the bill, while DNC Chair Ken Martin warned it would cost Republicans in future elections.
“Today, Donald Trump sealed the fate of the Republican Party,” Martin said, accusing the GOP of prioritising billionaires over working families.

Despite fierce opposition, Trump celebrated the moment as a symbol of American resurgence and Republican unity, posing with congressional allies and mingling with supporters after the ceremony.
