Kishtwar, Jul 2: A fierce encounter is underway between security forces and terrorists in the Chatroo area of Jammu and Kashmir's Kishtwar district, officials confirmed on Wednesday. The operation was launched by a joint team of the Army and J&K Police after inputs about terrorists hiding in the mountainous terrain.
"Yes, contact has been established," a senior army officer said, indicating that at least three terrorists are believed to be trapped in the cordoned area. This region has witnessed multiple encounters over the past year. On May 22, a soldier was killed during a similar operation in the same area.
Once considered free from terrorism, Kishtwar in the Jammu province has emerged as a hotspot of terror activity. Officials say terrorists operating here are trained in jungle warfare and have been involved in attacks on both civilians and security personnel.
The ongoing operation comes just a day before the annual Amarnath Yatra begins. Security has been intensified across the Union Territory, with 600 additional paramilitary companies deployed to secure the pilgrimage.
Due to heightened threats, the Yatra route from both Pahalgam and Baltal has been declared a no-fly zone, cancelling helicopter services for pilgrims this year. Police have advised Yatris to follow all protocols strictly and travel in designated, heavily guarded convoys for their safety.
