Jhansi, Jul 2: In a sensational case of murder, deceit, and theft, the Jhansi police have unearthed a chilling conspiracy behind the murder of 54-year-old Sushila Devi, leading to the arrest of her younger daughter-in-law and two accomplices.
The case, which shook Kumhariya village in Uttar Pradesh, took a dramatic turn as police arrested Pooja, the victim’s daughter-in-law, her sister Kamla, and Kamla’s lover Anil Verma for allegedly plotting and executing the crime. The murder occurred on June 24, and within 48 hours, police zeroed in on the suspects using forensic evidence and family testimonies.

Anil Verma, who had been absconding since the incident, was intercepted by police on Tuesday night while trying to sell stolen gold ornaments worth nearly Rs 8 lac. He allegedly opened fire on the police during the attempted arrest, prompting retaliatory action. Verma was injured and is currently under treatment at Jhansi Medical College under tight security.
Superintendent of Police (City) Gyanendra Kumar confirmed that Pooja confessed during interrogation, admitting to orchestrating the murder with the help of Kamla and Anil. The trio reportedly killed Sushila Devi and looted jewellery, a motorcycle, and a country-made pistol from the house.
The motive, police say, was rooted in prolonged disputes over inheritance and agricultural land. Pooja, widowed and later in a relationship with her married brother-in-law Santosh, had begun asserting control over family decisions, including pushing for the sale of her claimed share of the family's 16-bigha landholding.
Sushila Devi had reportedly opposed the sale, leading Pooja to plan her elimination. The house was found ransacked after the murder, confirming robbery along with homicide.
Adding to the intrigue, police have now reopened investigations into the suspicious deaths of Pooja’s two brothers-in-law, Kalyan Singh and Santosh. Pooja had relationships with both men, raising further questions about past family tragedies.
With Anil Verma's arrest and recovery of the stolen valuables and weapon, police say the murder case has entered a crucial phase. The three accused remain in judicial custody as the probe continues.
