New Delhi, Jun 30: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a scathing counterattack on the INDIA bloc over its renewed opposition to Waqf reforms, warning that attempts to undermine the Constitution under the guise of minority appeasement will not be tolerated. BJP spokesperson and Rajya Sabha MP Sudhanshu Trivedi, addressing a press conference on Monday, accused the Opposition alliance of trying to reintroduce Sharia-like laws through political backdoors and vowed that the country would remain governed by the Constitution of Babasaheb Ambedkar, not religious decrees.
Trivedi’s remarks came in response to recent statements by RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, who, at a massive rally in Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on Sunday, declared that the Waqf Act brought in under the NDA government would be discarded if the Mahagathbandhan were voted to power in Bihar. With elections due later this year in the state, Yadav's fiery rhetoric has sparked fierce debate over the political use of religious legislation.

“The INDIA alliance is living in a dangerous illusion if it thinks it can overturn the Constitution. Their agenda of backdoor Sharia enforcement is a betrayal of democratic values,” Trivedi said. He condemned the venue of Yadav’s speech — the same Gandhi Maidan that once saw protests against the Emergency — calling it ironic and unfortunate that the Opposition was now “conspiring against the Constitution” at that very site.
Trivedi accused the RJD and Congress of pandering to vote bank politics and ignoring constitutional boundaries in the name of protecting minority rights. He warned that such statements were not only unconstitutional but an insult to the nation’s founding principles. “These are not reforms; these are attempts to usurp constitutional powers for political gains,” he said.
The BJP leader went a step further, invoking examples from several Muslim-majority countries including Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Turkey, and questioned whether the INDIA bloc intended to push for laws even more rigid than those enforced under Sharia systems abroad.
He also took aim at parties like the RJD and Samajwadi Party, accusing them of distorting the idea of socialism. “They claim to be champions of ‘samajvaad’ (socialism), but how does one justify the Waqf Board holding ownership over 49 lakh acres of land in the name of public good? This contradicts the very principles of equal wealth distribution,” Trivedi stated.
Demanding accountability, the BJP has now asked INDIA bloc leaders to explain their position on the Waqf Act clearly, while reiterating that the BJP will continue to uphold constitutional integrity and oppose any move that threatens the secular and legal framework of the nation.
