India to build energy stack to power future-ready, digital grid

New Delhi, Jun 28: The Ministry of Power has unveiled a transformative new initiative to create the India Energy Stack (IES), a unified digital infrastructure aimed at revolutionising the country's energy ecosystem. The initiative is being rolled out through a newly formed task force and will serve as a foundational step towards a modern, integrated, and consumer-centric electricity network.

The India Energy Stack is designed as a secure, interoperable Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) that will integrate renewable energy, improve power distribution company (DISCOM) efficiency, and provide transparent, real-time services to consumers. Officials say it will do for the energy sector what Aadhaar did for identity and UPI for digital payments.

With India eyeing a $5 trillion economy and its Net Zero commitments, the Ministry of Power sees the need to re-engineer digital systems to manage soaring electricity demand, rising renewables, electric vehicles, and smarter energy markets.

Key features of the IES include:

• Unique digital IDs for consumers, assets, and energy transactions
• Consent-based, real-time data sharing
• Open APIs to enable system integration and innovation
• Tools for improved market access and consumer participation

“This is the next big leap. Just as UPI transformed financial services, the India Energy Stack will reshape how energy is produced, distributed, and consumed,” said Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar.

To validate the concept, a 12-month pilot will be undertaken featuring the Utility Intelligence Platform (UIP), a modular, analytics-based tool built atop IES. The UIP will help DISCOMs and policymakers track and manage energy flows, consumer behaviour, and system performance in real time.

Pilot tests will be conducted in Mumbai, Delhi, and Gujarat, with input from DISCOMs and sector regulators. The task force leading the project includes experts in power systems, digital tech, and energy policy.

The Ministry also plans to publish a white paper on the India Energy Stack, inviting public feedback before its nationwide rollout.
