Trump’s old tweets on Iran resurface amid escalating conflict

Washington, Jun 23: As US-Iran tensions hit a boiling point following the American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, former social media posts by President Donald Trump have resurfaced, highlighting a stark contrast between his past remarks and current policies.

On Saturday, the United States launched a major military operation, striking three of Iran’s nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — using precision-guided bunker-buster bombs. The strike was seen as a coordinated move alongside Israel’s ongoing operation 'Rising Lion'.

While Trump justified the attacks by claiming ‘monumental damage’ had been inflicted on Iran’s underground nuclear sites, a tweet from 2013 criticizing then-President Barack Obama has reignited debate. “Remember that I predicted a long time ago that President Obama will attack Iran because of his inability to negotiate properly,” Trump had posted over a decade ago.

Even earlier, in 2011, Trump had claimed Obama might start a war with Iran to boost re-election chances. Ironically, Trump now finds himself leading the most significant Western military action against Iran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Unlike Trump, Obama had brokered a landmark nuclear deal with Iran in 2015, aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear ambitions. Trump, however, withdrew from the agreement in 2018, sparking renewed tensions.

On Sunday, Iran vowed to defend itself and accused Washington and Tel Aviv of escalating the crisis, while satellite imagery hinted at severe damage to Iran’s fortified Fordow facility. The US reportedly used 75 precision munitions, including Tomahawk missiles, in the strike, according to General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Trump’s recent social media post declared, “Bullseye! Monumental damage was done… the biggest damage took place far below ground.” However, with the region on high alert and calls for diplomacy growing louder, the fallout from both the strikes and Trump’s own contradictory past may further complicate the crisis.
