Minnesota, Jun 21: Vance Luther Boelter, the man accused of killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, reportedly wrote a conspiracy-filled letter claiming Governor Tim Walz ordered him to assassinate US Senator Amy Klobuchar, according to the Minnesota Star Tribune, which cited sources familiar with the letter.
The handwritten letter, described as "rambling and conspiratorial," was allegedly found near Boelter’s home in Green Isle. In it, the 57-year-old suspect claimed he had been “trained off the books” by the US military and that Gov. Walz — who has not expressed any Senate ambitions — had instructed him to eliminate Klobuchar and other targets.
Daniel Borgertpoepping, spokesperson for the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office, declined to confirm the contents of the letter due to the ongoing investigation but stated, “We have seen no evidence that the allegations regarding Governor Walz are based in fact.”
Boelter was arrested after a two-day manhunt last week. He is accused of impersonating a police officer and fatally shooting Melissa and Mark Hortman outside Minneapolis. That same night, he allegedly attacked State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, at their home. Both survived gunshot injuries.
The U.S. Department of Justice stated that Boelter "put into effect a calculated plan to inflict fear and violence upon Minnesota elected officials and their families," adding that he wore body armor and claimed to be a police officer before opening fire on the Hoffmans.
Governor Walz called the shootings a "politically motivated assassination" and has not yet publicly addressed Boelter’s claims in the letter.
Boelter now faces multiple charges, including:
• Two counts of first-degree murder for the killings of Melissa and Mark Hortman
• Two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder
• Two federal firearms charges related to the attacks
The case has shaken Minnesota’s political landscape and raised serious concerns over the safety of public officials.
