ChatGPT faces global outage; OpenAI probes elevated error rates

Bengaluru, Jun 10: Popular AI chatbot ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, experienced a major outage on Tuesday, leaving users across the world — including in India — unable to load responses or access services.

OpenAI acknowledged the disruption, stating that users were facing “elevated error rates and latency” across its AI platforms. “We are investigating,” the company posted on its official status page.

According to monitoring site Downdetector, there was a sharp spike in reports of ChatGPT malfunctions, with nearly 88% of users in India saying the chatbot was unresponsive. Around 8% reported problems with the mobile app, while 3% cited API-related issues.

As the outage unfolded, users took to social media to voice their frustrations. “Everyone running to Twitter (now X) to check if ChatGPT is down for anyone else,” one user quipped. Another lamented, “ChatGPT is down, which means I actually have to type out my own emails at work. Send prayers.”

The outage comes at a time when OpenAI has expanded its offerings. The company recently reported that ChatGPT now supports 3 million paying business users — up from 2 million in February. Earlier this month, OpenAI also rolled out new enterprise tools, including beta “connectors” that integrate ChatGPT with popular platforms like Dropbox, Google Drive, SharePoint, and Box.

These tools aim to boost workplace productivity by allowing employees to fetch detailed data from various third-party services directly within the ChatGPT interface. Additionally, deep research connectors have been introduced for HubSpot, Linear, and Microsoft and Google ecosystems.

While OpenAI works to resolve the current technical glitch, users around the world are waiting for the AI service to resume normal functioning.
