Mangaluru, June 5: Congress MLC B K Hariprasad has called for stringent action against the masterminds who incite violence and killings in Dakshina Kannada district, a region known for its history of communal harmony.

He said that while perpetrators are being caught, those orchestrating such incidents from behind the scenes are escaping punishment and must be brought to justice.

Addressing a gathering organised by Ulama Coordination Karnataka at Jamiyyatul Falah Hall in Kankanady on Thursday, Hariprasad stated, “There are invisible forces behind these killings. The individuals who carry out the murders are getting arrested, but the masterminds always manage to escape. We need to remain vigilant about these hidden hands.”

“Dakshina Kannada is a district known for its communal harmony. Nearly 90% of people here live with mutual trust and respect. But recent killings of innocent individuals have disrupted this harmony. To protect and promote peace, I propose convening a meeting with leaders of all religious communities,” he added.

Hariprasad assured the gathering that memorandum of demands submitted by the Ulama Coordination Committee would be forwarded to the chief minister within two days. He also committed to holding discussions with the government to address the pressing issues raised.

The event was attended by key religious and community leaders including Syed Ismail Thangal Madani, Muhiyuddin Kamil Sakhafi (Toke), Ashraf Sa’adi (Mallur), K.M. Usmanul Faizi (Thodar), chairman of the District Wakf Advisory Committee Abdul Nasir Lakkistar, former city councillor Abdul Rauf, and others.

The meeting began with introductory remarks by N K M Shafi Sa’adi, and the key demands were presented by M S M Abdul Rasheed Zaini and Anis Kousari.

Key demands outlined in the Ulama Coordination Committee’s memorandum

  1. Zero tolerance for hate speech: Elected representatives who spread communal hatred must not be granted bail or court injunctions. They should be immediately removed from public office and awarded exemplary punishment.

  2. Tougher laws against hate speech: Long-term imprisonment must be mandated for those who deliver hate speeches that lead to assaults or killings, to act as a deterrent.

  3. Justice for Abdul Rahman: The murderers of Abdul Rahman of Kolattamajalu, and the forces behind the crime, must be arrested without delay and severely punished. The government should provide his family with Rs 50 lac in compensation.

  4. Support for injured victim: Khalandar Shafi, who sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment in hospital, should have his entire medical expenses borne by the government, and also receive Rs 10 lac in compensation.

  5. Action in Wayanad mob lynching: The culprits involved in the mob lynching of Ashraf from Wayanad, Kerala, must be arrested immediately and imprisoned. Adequate compensation should be provided to his family.

  6. Expedite justice in NRC firing cases: Several innocent Muslim youth arrested during the NRC protests in Mangaluru continue to face legal hurdles. Justice should be expedited in their cases.

  7. Ensure safe and peaceful Bakrid: With Bakrid falling on June 7, and animal sacrifice being a central ritual, growing threats from communal elements in various places have left the Muslim community fearful. The government must ensure adequate security and support to facilitate peaceful religious observance.
