Dakshina Kannada, Udupi: Rains ease; yellow alert sounded for four days

Mangaluru, June 1: There was a slight respite from heavy rains in Dakshina Kannada district on Saturday. Some parts of the district received moderate rainfall during the day.

In Puttur, Bantwal, and Beltangady taluks, heavy rain lashed several areas late Friday night, causing temporary flooding that lasted into Saturday morning before receding. Across the district, including in Mangaluru, residents of water-logged houses were seen engaged in cleaning operations from early morning.

Belandur records highest rainfall

As of 8:30 am on May 31, Dakshina Kannada district recorded an average of 132.3 mm of rainfall. Belandur in Puttur taluk received the highest rainfall with 480.5 mm. Other notable readings included:

  • Barya – 369 mm
  • Bellare – 278.5 mm
  • Ramakunja – 272.5 mm
  • Ilanthila – 268.5 mm
  • Kaval Moodur – 246 mm
  • Sarapady – 229.5 mm
  • Laila – 221.5 mm
  • Alankaru – 215.5 mm

Rainfall taluk-wise:

  • Beltangady – 148.8 mm
  • Bantwal – 138.3 mm
  • Mangaluru – 47.1 mm
  • Puttur – 167.1 mm
  • Sullia – 151.4 mm
  • Moodbidri – 61 mm
  • Kadaba – 156.9 mm
  • Mulki – 32.6 mm
  • Ullal – 70.8 mm

Overall, while the normal average rainfall for the district is 10.5 mm, it received 132.3 mm on this day.

Three houses were partially damaged in the district. Damage was also reported to 151 electric poles, 10 transformers, and 7.550 km of electric lines. A 25-member NDRF team has been stationed in Puttur, a 15-member SDRF team in Mangaluru, a 10-member team in Subrahmanya, and 25 boats are on standby for rescue operations.

Yellow alert issued

Rainfall is expected to continue in Dakshina Kannada, and the meteorological department has issued a yellow alert from June 1 to 4.

Udupi: Rainfall on the decline

The intensity of rainfall has reduced significantly across Udupi district. No rain was reported in Udupi, Kundapur, Karkala, or any of the taluks on Saturday.

From morning till evening, the weather remained cloudy with intermittent sunshine. Pending work along highways and other areas resumed. According to the weather department, the district is expected to receive very light rainfall till June 3, though wind speeds may remain high.

In Byndoor taluk, a tree fell on a house, causing an estimated loss of around Rs 4 lac. One house each in Kundapur and Kaup taluks suffered partial damage due to fallen trees. In Brahmavar, a tree fell on a cattle shed, also causing partial damage.
