Panaji, May 30: Panic gripped the Old Goa ferry ramp area on Wednesday after a fire broke out on a ferry operating along the Old Goa-Diwar route. The incident occurred while the vessel was stationed on the Old Goa side, sending thick plumes of smoke billowing into the air.

Eyewitnesses reported that the fire was first noticed in the engine section, shortly before the ferry was scheduled to depart. Swift action by the ferry staff and local responders ensured that all passengers and vehicles were safely evacuated in time.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and managed to bring the blaze under control before it could spread further or cause structural damage to the ferry. No injuries or casualties have been reported.

Initial investigations point to a possible short circuit as the cause of the fire, though officials are yet to confirm the exact reason.

The incident briefly disrupted ferry services on the busy route that connects the historic precinct of Old Goa to Diwar island. Authorities have temporarily suspended operations for a safety inspection and are coordinating with the River Navigation Department to resume service at the earliest.

This is not the first time ferry operations in Goa have faced safety challenges, raising questions about maintenance protocols and emergency preparedness.
