Panaji, May 30: marks a proud moment in the history of Goa as the picturesque coastal state celebrates its 39th Statehood Day. Known for its golden beaches, vibrant culture, and unique Indo-Portuguese legacy, Goa today stands tall as India’s smallest state by area but one of its most significant in spirit and heritage.
Why is Goa Statehood Day celebrated on May 30?
After being under Portuguese rule for over 450 years, Goa was liberated by Indian armed forces on December 19, 1961, during Operation Vijay. Following this, it was administered as a Union Territory, along with Daman and Diu. However, the people of Goa longed for full-fledged statehood and a distinct political identity.

That dream was realised on May 30, 1987, when Goa was officially declared the 25th state of the Republic of India. This historic day is now celebrated annually to honour Goa’s integration into the Indian Union with full statehood.
Significance of the day
Goa Statehood Day is more than just a constitutional milestone; it symbolises the journey of Goans — from colonial subjugation to democratic empowerment. The day serves as a tribute to the numerous freedom fighters, leaders, and citizens who fought tirelessly for Goa’s liberation and subsequent recognition as a state.
It also marks a reaffirmation of Goa’s distinct cultural identity, language, and heritage which continue to enrich the fabric of India.
Celebrations in 2025
This year, the state-level celebrations will be held at the Dinanath Mangeshkar Kala Mandir, Kala Academy, Panaji, at 11 am on Friday, May 30. The event promises a cultural mosaic of Goa’s talent and achievements. Key highlights include:
