Mumbai, May 21: Saba Ali Khan, daughter of veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, shared beautiful moments from the 2025 Cannes Film Festival featuring her mother and actress Simi Garewal. The occasion marked the screening of the 1970 Satyajit Ray classic “Aranyer Din Ratri” (Days and Nights in the Forest), which was showcased in a 4K restored version under the Cannes Classics section.

Taking to Instagram, Saba posted a collection of elegant snapshots and videos from the event. These included a touching moment where Sharmila Tagore received a standing ovation from the audience, a candid photo of her speaking at the venue, and a special frame with celebrated Hollywood filmmaker Wes Anderson, who presented the screening. In her caption, Saba wrote: “A little more... of moments. Standing ovation. A beautiful celebration of life. Team that made it all possible. Congratulations!”

The restoration of “Aranyer Din Ratri” was carried out by The Film Foundation's World Cinema Project at L'Immagine Ritrovata, in collaboration with the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF), Janus Films, and the Criterion Collection, with financial support from the Golden Globe Foundation.

Directed by Satyajit Ray and based on the novel by Sunil Gangopadhyay, the film is a profound tale of four city friends who travel to the forests of Palamau seeking an escape from routine life, only to embark on a deeper journey of self-discovery. Known for its carnivalesque narrative style, the film was nominated for the Golden Bear at the 20th Berlin International Film Festival. Its sequel, “Abar Aranye,” directed by Goutam Ghose, was released in 2003.

The evening at Cannes was not just a celebration of a cinematic masterpiece, but also a tribute to the legacy of Indian cinema on the global stage
