Chandel, May 15: In a major counter-insurgency operation near the Indo-Myanmar border, security forces neutralised ten militants in Manipur’s Chandel district on Wednesday, following a fierce gunfight with troops of the Assam Rifles.
According to a statement released by the Eastern Command of the Indian Army, the action was initiated based on specific intelligence inputs about the movement of heavily armed militant cadres near New Samtal village in Khengjoy Tehsil, located close to the international border.

Responding swiftly, a team of the Assam Rifles, operating under the Army's Spear Corps, launched a search and intercept mission in the early hours of May 14. During the operation, the troops came under sudden fire from the suspected insurgents.
“The troops, without delay, retaliated in a calibrated and tactical manner. In the ensuing encounter, ten militants were neutralised,” the Army stated in an official release on X (formerly Twitter).
A substantial cache of arms and ammunition was also recovered from the site, further underlining the scale of the planned insurgent activity.
While the identities and affiliations of the slain militants are yet to be confirmed, security forces continue combing operations in the dense forest region to ensure no remnants of the militant group remain active.
The area has been a known hotspot for insurgent activity due to its proximity to the porous Indo-Myanmar border, often exploited by various armed groups for movement and cross-border infiltration.
The Indian Army reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region and lauded the bravery and precision shown by the Assam Rifles personnel during the high-risk operation.
Security across sensitive areas in Manipur has been tightened in the wake of the incident, with further surveillance operations expected in the coming days.
