Muktsar, May 13: Even as the wheat procurement season draws to a close, nearly 25 per cent of the procured produce in Punjab’s Muktsar district continues to lie in grain markets, triggering anxiety among farmers and commission agents (arhtiyas) amid changing weather conditions.
According to data released by the district administration, a total of 8,94,849 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat had arrived at the mandis till Monday evening. Of this, 8,91,772 MT was purchased by government agencies and private buyers. However, only 6,71,620 MT has been lifted so far, leaving a substantial stock of 2,20,152 MT still awaiting transportation.
Adding to the concern, wheat arrival in the mandis has now slowed down, with only 5,469 MT arriving on Monday. However, the backlog of unlifted wheat remains a major worry, especially in the wake of unpredictable weather. Recent dust storms and rainfall have already affected some of the produce, raising fears of further spoilage if lifting delays continue.
A local arhtiya expressed concern, saying, “The current lifting pace is satisfactory, but with weather fluctuations becoming more frequent, the remaining stock should be transported at the earliest to avoid damage.”
Meanwhile, a senior district official informed Daijiworld that the administration is in constant coordination with procurement agencies and transporters to expedite the process. “The declining daily wheat arrivals will assist in clearing the pending stock soon,” he added.
The situation underscores the urgent need for swift action to protect farmers’ hard-earned produce and ensure smooth completion of the procurement cycle amidst unstable weather patterns.
