Tennessee, May 10: A mild earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck East Tennessee on the morning of May 10, with tremors felt across multiple southeastern US states including parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Virginia, and the Carolinas, federal officials reported.
The quake occurred at 9:04 a.m. near Greenback, located approximately 30 miles southwest of Knoxville, the US Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed.
Despite the widespread reach of the tremors, no damage was reported. “We have not received any damage calls related to the earthquake,” said Mark Wilbanks, spokesperson for the Knoxville Fire Department. Knoxville Police also confirmed no reports of injuries or damage.
According to the Michigan Technological University, quakes of this magnitude are “often felt, but only cause minor damage.” This was echoed in the region's experience, as the shaking led only to brief moments of concern but no disruptions.
Though earthquakes in Tennessee are not uncommon, they tend to be minor. USGS data reveals that in the past 30 days, Tennessee experienced 21 small quakes, with only three others in the past year exceeding a magnitude of 3.0.
Seismologists continue to monitor the area for aftershocks, though the likelihood of significant follow-up tremors remains low.
