Sanvordem, May 5: Tensions are rising in Goa’s Sanvordem village as residents of Falnem and Mirabag wards have voiced strong opposition to a proposed bandhara (check dam) by the Water Resources Department (WRD), citing safety risks, lack of consultation, and a threat to local livelihoods.

At a village meeting, panchayat member Sanjay Naik warned that the new site, situated just 30 metres from residential houses and farms, could severely disrupt daily life. He revealed that the WRD had originally selected Mirabag for the bandhara, but shifted plans following strong protests from locals over the potential damage to homes and farmland.

Now relocated between the Mirabag and Falnem wards, the new location is in a densely populated area, sparking renewed public outrage. Villager Anand Naik questioned the necessity of the project, arguing it brings no visible benefits to the community and lacks justification.

Critics also slammed the WRD for failing to consult with local residents or the panchayat, further deepening mistrust. No signboards or public notices have been put up at the site, adding to suspicions about the project’s intent and legality.

“The community feels sidelined and ignored,” said Sanjay Naik, pointing to past resistance that successfully halted the project in Mirabag. “We will not allow a similar threat in the heart of our village.”

With transparency and community engagement in question, the villagers’ resistance shows no signs of backing down, setting the stage for a potential standoff unless officials address their growing concerns.
