Tensions escalate: Pakistan alleges imminent Indian strike, warns of retaliation

Islamabad, Apr 30: In a dramatic development that has raised alarm across the region, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, convened an emergency press conference at 2 am on Wednesday, warning of a possible Indian military strike within the next 24 to 36 hours. The late-night address follows mounting tensions in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tarar claimed that Pakistan's security agencies have received ‘credible, intelligence-based information’ suggesting that India is preparing for a military offensive. “Any action by India will be responded to with full force. We will defend our territory, sovereignty, and integrity at all costs,” he said, asserting that any such action would be met with decisive retaliation.

He urged the international community to take ‘immediate cognizance’ of what he described as India’s ‘planned aggression,’ and alleged that New Delhi had failed to present any evidence implicating Islamabad in the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26, mostly tourists.

“India has not shared a shred of evidence with Pakistan, yet continues to make unfounded allegations,” Tarar said. “Instead, we have proof of India’s involvement in cross-border terrorism on our soil.”

Accusing India of acting unilaterally, he said, “India’s habit of being the judge, jury and executioner is categorically rejected by Pakistan.”

The press conference comes at a time of visible military buildup along the Line of Control (LoC) and international border, with reports of heavy troop movements from both sides. Diplomatic ties have sharply deteriorated, and both countries have begun taking retaliatory measures. Pakistan has shut its airspace to Indian airlines, while India has reportedly suspended provisions of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Earlier, Pakistan’s defense minister Khawaja Asif had also sounded alarm bells, warning of an ‘imminent’ Indian military incursion and stating that Pakistan would consider the use of nuclear weapons only in the event of an existential threat.

The situation remains tense, with regional and global stakeholders closely monitoring developments in the subcontinent.
