Kerala: Women Scaling New Heights with Coconut Tree-Climbing Machine

Kerala: Women Scaling New Heights with Coconut Tree-Climbing Machine

Kozhikode, Dec 3 (Economic Times): Thirty-four-year-old Praseetha Dineshan from Kattipara panchayat in Kozhikode used to work as a postwoman delivering letters from 8 am to 5.30 pm. No longer.

After completing a training course of Coconut Development Board (CDB) for climbing coconut tree using a machine, she has now quit her temporary job and is happy to climb coconut trees to pluck coconuts.

"Yesterday I climbed 15 trees and today I did 20. More and more people are calling me to climb trees and I get Rs 15 per tree," she said.

She can complete her job by afternoon and can get paid even more. Praseetha is even thinking of buying a Scooty on loan as she often has to hire an auto-rickshaw to reach some of the places where she has to pluck coconuts. As yet another male bastion falls with more and more women shedding their inhibitions and coming forward to climb coconut trees, the climbing profession may soon become a family affair with the woman and her husband or brother taking up the job.

The tall coconut trees which once gave Kerala its name, and glory, had recently become its bane with a scarcity of climbers. Absence of climbers resulted in the neglect of coconut trees which even led to a decline in coconut productivity in the state. The physical strain involved in climbing had prevented women from climbing coconut trees.

But a climbing machine introduced by the Coconut Development Board (CDB) seems to have solved the problem. The board recently launched a "Friends of Coconut Tree" programme to train unemployed youth in the art of climbing coconut trees and caring for them. However, the programme has caught the attention of women in the state.

The first week of November saw the first batch of 20 women climbers aged between 20 and 35 complete a six-day training at the Peruvannamuzhi Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) of the Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR) in Kozhikode. Quite a number of women are now prepared to take up the activity as the strain involved is less with the use of machine.

I appreciate this innovation for solving the problem of coconut harvesting in labour crisis era, which requires courage and lot of efforts to climbing on coconut. This machine is fastest among the other commutative climbing system. The safety feature in other devices makes them recommendable but their capacity is low. To overcome this problem and help the coconut-growing farmers, the scientists of Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) working at Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, ICAR, Bhopal in collaboration with Central Plantation Crop Research Institute, Kasargod have developed a safety attachment for Chemperi model type climbing device to provide safety to coconut tree climbers.

The developed safety device ensures the safety of the climbers while climbing as well as harvesting the coconuts. The device consists of a small attachment to the climbing device, which positively locks the climbing machine to the coconut tree if the climber looses balance and slips. This is possible since the developed devise is attached to the full body harness worn by the climber. Likewise, another positive locking device has been provided to lock the machine to the tree trunk to enable the climber to climb up or down from the crown to the device for crown cleaning and other routine operations performed on the coconut tree including pollination, insecticide application and crown management etc. In case, the climber slips and began to fall, he/she would suspend in the body harness and can regain his/her position in a few seconds even without the assistance of any other person. The attachment provides full safety to the climber during climbing and harvesting operations. This devise reduces the height phobia largely prevalent among the climbers and virtually eliminates the risk of falling down from tall coconut trees.

This is a interesting innovation to help the people at the bottom of the pyramid to earn a decent living by harnessing their potential. A man can climb upto 50/60 trees and make Rs. 1000 to 2000 per day. Most of the Kerala and coastal area of Karnataka people go to Gulf and work like a helper, utility workers etc..etc..to earn Rs. 6000 to 10000 per month but there is nobody to do it at home and earn atleast Rs. 500 to 1000 per day in our country. Hats off to Keralies for their innovation.

Training makes one perfect. If women body builders are there in the world...cant our women build their body to climb a coconut tree..!!??? Which is very important present situation...Women can do anything that men can do...gone are the days of male domination...courage is important and once you have courage..you can do anything...If women can birth to a child (I think which is more laborious and painful)...what is this coconut climbing..?

AS WE ALL ARE IN INDIA NOW EMBRACING NEW TECHNOLOGY, AS MAIN REASON FOR THIS IS, NO LABORS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PADDY CULTIVATION AS WELL AS TO PLUCK THE COCONUTS. AS WE KNOW MOST OF THE UNSKILLED LABORS MALES & FEMALES (FOR HOUSE-MAID) MIGRATE TO GCC BY PAYING 1.5 LAC RS TO AGENTS FOR RS6000 TO RS.7000 SALARY PER MONTH. LIVE THERE IN CONTAINERS WITHOUT PROPER ACS, NO MONTHLY PROPER SALARY AND STRUGGLE THERE. WHERE AS IN INDIA NOW PER DAY SALARY FOR UNSKILLED LABORS ARE RS.400 TO RS.500 (FOR 30 DAYS RS.12,000 TO 15,000) IF HUSBAND WIFE WORK THEN RS.24,000 TO RS.30,000) SO WHICH IS BETTER, WORKING IN INDIA OR STRUGGLING IN GCC FOR NOTHING. WAKE-UP FELLOWS, THINK TWICE-THRICE, WE HAVE PLENTY OF JOB IN IN OUR VILLAGE-CITY, SO USE THE OPPORTINUTY, THINK POSITIVE. JAI HO....

    @ Vincy,Bangkok,

    Dear Vincy,

Readers can feel your attitiude with your inappropriate comments.Instead of appreciating the new innovative idea which could benefit thousand of coconut growers, you prefered to write comments which could instigate people. If you think people enjoy such sarcasm filled comments, you are wrong.I have been reading comments from readers on various issues since long time. There are some more people who enjoy writing such comments. I sincerely request the readers to write comments such a way that everyone enjoy reading and comments be positive and useful to Mangalorean community.

Two to Three decades before many of the groups did not exist. Probably these groups surfaced because of the illogical attitude of handful of people who always thought and acted differently.
