Gadag, Apr 29: Wooing the Lambani community in the Shirahatti assembly constituency, which is part of the Haveri Lok Sabha seat, former chief minister and BJP candidate Basavaraj Bommai said the Lambani community will continue to remain part of the Scheduled Castes.

“Lambanis remaining as part of SC community is as permanent as the existence of Sun and Moon,” declared the BJP leader while participating in the Lambani convention organised as part of his election campaign on Monday.

Bommai said the Lambanis or Banjara community is the most cultured with its own distinctive status and is deprived of benefits because the community lives mostly in Tandas, which do not enjoy the fruits of development.

He pointed out that he along with former minister C M Udasi prevailed upon the then chief minister B S Yediyurappa to set up a separate Lambani Development Corporation, which paved the way for development of Tandas and construction of Seva Lal Bhavans.

The BJP leader promised to fight for the welfare of the community after getting elected as MP and the Sadashiva Commission had recommended 3% separate reservation for the Lambani community, which has been accepted by the Congress government. “We are demanding 4.5 % reservation for the community and will legally fight for the justice,” he promised.
