Over Half of Americans Aware of Occupy Wall St Protests

Washington, Oct 11 (IANS/EFE): While 51 percent of US residents are aware of the Occupy Wall Street movement, fewer than half of those who know of the protests have an opinion about them, a opinion poll released Monday indicates.

The movement, which began Sep 17 in Lower Manhattan's financial district, has spread to other US cities, including Washington, Boston, Chicago and Austin, Texas.

Of the respondents who had heard of the protests, 27 percent expressed support, 19 percent said they were opposed and 54 percent had no opinion one way or the other, said an ORC Internacional Caravan Poll.

Participants in the various Occupy protest identify themselves as among the 99 percent of the US population whose economic fortunes have suffered even as those in the top 1 percent have grown richer.

ORC Internacional Caravan conducted 1,005 telephone interviews during the period Oct 6-9. The survey has a margin of error of plus/minus three percentage points.
