Puttur: St Philomena College students shine at Mangalore University weightlifting championship

Puttur, Mar 20: In a display of sheer strength and skill, athletes from St Philomena College showcased their prowess at the Mangalore University inter-collegiate weightlifting championship 2023-24, Prof Richard Rebello rolling trophy for ‘Men,’ Shirva Blossom Mansion Celestine D’Souza trophy for women held at the SDM College of Business Management premises. The event, organized by Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Business Management, Mangaluru and the department of physical education, Mangalore University, saw an intense competition where St Philomena College emerged as an assertive force.

Spandana of I BSc (45 Kg), representing St Philomena College, clinched the gold medal and set a new meet record in the women’s category, setting her position as a standout performer. Meanwhile, Mahammad Munaf III BCom (67Kg) secured the silver medal in the men’s division, showcasing remarkable strength and determination.

Surakshith II BBA (55Kg) and Chaithrika I BSc claimed bronze medals, demonstrating their exceptional talent and dedication to the sport. The triumph continued as Beulah PT I MCom (64Kg) emerged as the gold medallist, showcasing outstanding performance in the women’s weightlifting category.

In an impressive display of powerlifting, Shabarish Rai II BCom (81 Kg) and Abhiramachandra II BCom (89Kg) clinched gold medals in their respective weight categories, setting the stage on fire with their remarkable lifts. Yathish II BCom (89Kg) and Ranjith I BA (109 Kg) added to the medal tally by securing silver medals in their weight divisions, displaying remarkable strength and technique.

Spandana’s awesome performance earned her the title of best lifter in the women’s competition, further highlighting the domination of St Philomena College in the championship. With an overall third position in the women’s category and a commendable third overall position in the men’s category, St Philomena College athletes showcased their commitment to excellence and their unwavering dedication to the sport of weightlifting.

With a legacy of sports excellence, St Philomena College once again proved its mettle on the grand stage, leaving a lasting impression on the Mangalore University inter-collegiate weightlifting championship 2023-24. Principal of the college Dr Antony Prakash Monteiro and the faculty congratulated the physical education director Dr Elias Pinto, coach Pushparaj and the athletes.
