Mangaluru, Jan 25: The Social Democratic Youth Movement (SYS) organized a conference in Mangaluru, highlighting several key issues and demands.
Shapi Sahadi delivered a compelling speech, underscoring the significance of Muslim women wearing burqas when leaving their homes.
A crucial demand was the repeal of the previous government's hijab rule, stressing the importance of respecting individuals' religious choices. SYS also advocated for the restoration of the 4% reservation that was revoked by the government, echoing the sentiments of the community.
The conference addressed the need for releasing the 2013 census report and sought compensation for the families affected by the Golibar incident in Mangaluru. SYS urged the withdrawal of false cases against youth involved in the Hubballi incident and called for the immediate release of those wrongly detained after the DJ Halli-KJ Halli riots in Bengaluru.
The mishandling of the Bababudangiri Dargah issue by the previous government's committee in Chikkamagaluru was another point of contention. SYS called for corrective measures to rectify the perceived injustice.
In his speech, DyCM D K Shivakumar responded to the claims made at the conference, assuring SYS that the Siddaramaiah-led government stands in solidarity with them, emphasizing unity and support. Despite impending elections, Shivakumar refrained from direct political discussions, highlighting that the future of the country rests in the hands of the youth.
During his earlier address to media in Mangaluru, he announced that the Congress convention would take place in Mangalore next month, with leaders from Delhi, including AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, expected to attend. The Congress committee of Dakshina Kannada Udupi has taken responsibility for organizing the event.
Addressing speculations about Jagadish Shettar's return to the BJP, Shivakumar dismissed it as untrue, citing internal problems within the BJP and highlighting Shettar's significant contributions to the Congress party.
Responding to Veerappa Moily's criticism of Modi's fast, D K Shivakumar suggested that, given Moily's seniority, he should discuss the issue directly with him.
On the hijab ban issue, he said that discussions centred on the rights of Muslim leaders and the call for the ban's withdrawal have been held. Shivakumar also emphasized that all religious matters are in court and should be addressed within the framework of the law, ensuring the protection of all religions as per the constitution.
